About GPA

GPA is designed to meet the needs of a variety of learners, with standards-based, common core curriculum that includes an International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, Advanced Placement coursework, and a college-preparatory program serving grades 6-12.  Additional value is added through project-based learning, our Arts program, advanced technology, college & career preparation and planning, co-curricular activities, small class sizes and community service hours.


 

Middle School

The middle school program has a six-period schedule that runs for two semesters within the yearly school calendar.  The program’s curriculum is based on the California Content Standards and embraces the vision and philosophy of IB programme.  In addition to the core classes of English-language arts, history-social science, mathematics, and science, Middle school students take German or Spanish, physical education, and drama, music, technology, or art. Students who need additional academic support take academic support, English language learners (EL) take English Language Development (ELD), and Special Education students take study skills instead of an elective.  Additional information regarding the Middle School program, including academic, behavior and attendance expectations and policies, are included in the GPA Middle School Course Catalog and GPA Student Handbook.  

 

 

 

High School

The high school program has a six-period schedule similar to the middle school.  The high school offers a rigorous standards-based curriculum for students.  Students are provided with a choice of two education pathways:  college preparatory or IBDP.  Students also have the option of taking AP courses.  Courses in both pathways meet University of California (UC) A-G college entrance requirements, which prepare all students for a higher education opportunity upon graduation from GPA.  Elective options for high school students include beginning and advanced art, culinary arts, drama and music courses, computer literacy, physical education, sports PE, beginning and advanced German and Spanish courses, and IB electives. In addition, main campus high school students may have the option of taking courses through APEX Learning Systems, an online curriculum program, during the school year to make up required core courses.  Additional information regarding the high school program, including academic, behavior and attendance expectations and policies, are included in the GPA High School Course Catalog and GPA Student Handbook.


 

Expected School-wide Learning Outcomes

GPA is a school designed to provide choice and to meet the needs of a variety of learners, with curriculum that provides personal achievement and is challenging for students. The goal of GPA is to educate all members to strive to achieve the qualities of the Expected Schoolwide Learning Outcomes (“ESLOs”).  Defining GPA’s ESLOs is an on-going process, reviewed annually. In all levels of GPA grades--elementary, middle school and upper secondary grades--the goal of instruction is to promote student mastery of these ESLOs. The four ESLOs are incorporated into instruction in all subjects and are integral to school-wide assessments on an ongoing basis. This focus is evident in the school-wide writing rubric, in the ESLOs that are infused into subject area benchmarks, and in the performance tasks designed for the instructional units. Currently, GPA’s ESLOs are: self-directed learners, critical thinkers, effective communicators, and responsible citizens.
