School Profile

School and Community

Guajome Park Academy (GPA) is located in the northern region of San Diego County in Vista, California. Vista is approximately eight miles from the Pacific Ocean and has a population of approximately 101,000.  Guajome Park Academy (GPA) is a public, college-preparatory charter school of choice with 1,396 students.  Guajome Park Academy offers a Grade K-5 Primary School, Grade 6-8 Middle School, and a Grade 9-12 High School program, and is a designated International Baccalaureate (IB) school.

Since its inception in 1994, GPA has endeavored to establish and maintain a student body that is diverse in nature and generally reflective of the state of California and the sponsoring Vista Unified School District in terms of race, ethnicity, and socio-economic status.  GPA opened its brand-new, state of the art campus in 2004, and is located in proximity to both MiraCosta and Palomar Community       College, as well as California State University, San Marcos.

GPA is a school designed to meet the needs of a variety of learners, with a standards-based curriculum that includes three educational pathways for high school students: an International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, an IB Career Pathway Program, and a College-Prep Program. Courses in all pathways meet California State University and University of California A-G college entrance requirements, which prepare all students for a higher education opportunity after GPA. GPA also partners with local community colleges to provide concurrent enrollment options. Our mission at Guajome Park Academy is to inspire and empower all learners to become responsible, critically-thinking, compassionate global citizens who approach the world with curiosity, courage and resolve.

School Organization

GPA is on a semester calendar with a 1-6 bell schedule. The average class size at GPA is 30 students. GPA assigns letter grades using a 4.0 system (pluses and minuses are not factored into grade point average calculations), with some IB and AP courses receiving weighted value.  Letter grades are assigned as follows: A=90-100%; B=80-89%; C=70-79%; D=60-69%; F=59% and below.  GPA students have the option of enrolling in online AP courses (maximum of two-year-long online courses per student), which are designated on the transcript as (OL).  IB and AP courses are available on an open-enrollment basis for Juniors and Seniors. In order to enroll in an IB HL or HL2 course, students must have completed the corresponding IB SL or HL1 course. Class rank is calculated at each semester and is based on the academic, weighted 9-12 Grade Point Average.
